Something About A Rose is the debut EP from Ghanaian alt-pop artist Anabel Rose, marking an exciting introduction to her creative world. Just two years into her music career, Anabel steps forward with remarkable clarity, delivering a six-track journey that feels authentic, intimate, and genre-defying . With this project, she introduces listeners to the many facets of her identity and artistry, making Something About A Rose both a musical and visual experience.
The EP's concept is uniquely personal. Anabel describes each song as a "personified character, each with its own place in a visual world I've created" . This creative approach allows her to "express parts of myself I can't usually share out loud" . The title itself hints at layers—the beauty and complexity of a rose mirroring the depth of her artistry.
The EP opens with "Lungs," a track that highlights Anabel's soft yet powerful voice, produced by fellow 99Phaces member Mēl . "Smile" radiates warmth and confidence, with playful self-assurance in lines like "Face card, no, it never declines..." . "Won't Go Back" showcases her range—rapping, singing, and delivering quick-fire lyrics over a funky backdrop . The heart of the EP lies in "Too Friendly," a track that reflects on the struggle of being "too nice" and how kindness can be misinterpreted—an instantly relatable theme . "Love Me or Die" builds into a sweeping, cinematic experience, capturing both the thrill and vulnerability of love . The EP closes with "Do Not Disturb," a fast-paced, danceable number inspired by her struggle to balance a marketing job with her music career, which ultimately led her to quit her 9-to-5 and focus on artistry full-time .
Built on an alt-pop foundation, Something About A Rose blends in R&B, Funk, House, Rock, and Bossa Nova influences to craft a genre-crossing sound . Production comes from Insane Auggie, Mēl, Johnwav, Lolu, and Kxlab . With no features on the project, this is Anabel Rose simply being Anabel Rose—a bold new voice in alternative pop ready to be discovered .
