West African Music
West African music is not a genre. It's a region. And that distinction matters, because what comes out of Lagos, Accra, Dakar, and Abidjan is not one sound — it's dozens of sounds colliding, borrowing, and evolving in real time.
If you're new to the region's music, this page is your starting point. If you're already deep in it, this is where you'll find what's next.
What "West African Music" Actually MeansThe term covers a massive range. It includes Afrobeats from Nigeria, highlife from Ghana, mbalax from Senegal, coupé-décalé from Ivory Coast, and dozens of local styles that never crossed borders but shaped the ones that did.
The unifying thread is rhythm. West African music is built on polyrhythmic foundations — multiple beats layered at once — and that DNA runs through everything from Fela Kuti's Afrobeat to Burna Boy's crossover hits to the street-hop coming out of Ajegunle today.
The Sounds Shaping the Region Right NowAfrobeats (Nigeria)The commercial engine of the region. Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, and Tems have pushed Nigerian pop into global charts, but the genre's roots go back decades. Afrobeats blends Yoruba and Igbo vocal traditions with dancehall, hip-hop, and R&B production.
Street-Hop / Afrosounds (Nigeria)Rawer than mainstream Afrobeats. Artists like Bahd Man Niko, Zlatan, and Olamide built careers on Fuji cadences, Konto bounce, and lyrics that speak directly to the trenches. This is where the grit lives.
Highlife (Ghana)Ghana's gift to West African music. Highlife predates Afrobeats by decades, built on jazzy guitar lines, horn sections, and a swing that influenced everything that came after.
Mbalax (Senegal)Senegal's signature sound. Driven by the sabar drum, mbalax is rhythmic, fast, and deeply tied to Wolof culture. Youssou N'Dour made it global.
Coupé-Décalé (Ivory Coast)Ivorian street music built for dance floors. Fast, percussive, and born from the Ivorian diaspora in Paris in the early 2000s.
Afro-Fusion (The New Wave)The catch-all for artists blending everything — Afrobeats, R&B, electronic, alté — into something new. Tems, Amaarae, and Odunsi (the Engine) are the standard-bearers.
Why We Cover This RegionWest African music is having its global moment — but the coverage is often shallow. Big publications cover the hits and ignore the trenches. They write about the crossover and skip the culture.
This page exists to fix that. We listen to the records, verify the details, and write about what's actually happening — from the biggest Afrobeats releases to the street-hop tracks that never leave Lagos.
