Album: Nguva Yenyu by Mai Kuvheya

Nguva Yenyu is a notable gospel album from veteran Zimbabwean gospel singer Mai Kuvheya, adding to the rich tapestry of the country's gospel music scene. Known for her dedication to gospel music and her journey from a backing vocalist to a lead artist in her own right, Mai Kuvheya—born Forget Angela Kuvheya—has steadily built a reputation as a committed voice in Zimbabwean gospel. Born on February 2, 1993, in a family of eleven children, Kuvheya grew up listening to Chimurenga icon Thomas Mapfumo, which hooked her to traditional music and inspired her to sing her own music . She started singing at the age of eight as part of a school traditional dance group, eventually becoming the lead singer . Her journey in music saw her record her first track in 2008 at Heaven Scrappers studio, followed by her debut album Nguva yaMwari in 2016 .

The album features tracks that showcase Kuvheya's gospel roots, with songs like "Anotida" highlighting a more acoustic and contemplative gospel sound with a slow tempo and high acousticness . The track, released in October 2020, provides a glimpse into the album's musical direction, blending heartfelt worship with traditional gospel foundations . Other tracks on the album include "Changamire Muponesi" featuring Rev Mariga and Vimbai Kuvheya, as well as "Ndinobva Kwamuri," "Makandida Baba," and "Handina Simba" featuring Tinotenda Katsande .

Mai Kuvheya's journey to releasing Nguva Yenyu is one of perseverance. She began her career as a backing vocalist, supporting renowned gospel singers including Blessing Shumba, Rev Chivaviro, Daniel Mhere, Dorcas Moyo, and the Big Sound Collaboration . She also featured on projects with artists such as Byron Mulinga, Tinashe Mupambawashe, Maxwell Machisi, and Obert Chari . Her work with producer and instrumentalist Jonathan Mgazi saw her featured on two songs—Tomurumbidza and Muponesi Wangu—for another artist's album . Her experience as a backing vocalist and collaborator gave her the foundation to eventually step into the spotlight as a solo artist.
